Hem X Props
PROPS is a special collection from Hem X, curated by Modern Design Review. PROPS are functional and decorative, unlimiting limited editions. The Props collection is made up of six small series of five stools from pioneering design talents. Each stool is an original design for Hem X but makes use of the materials, methods and aesthetics that are typical of their designer; the fundamentals for collectible design. All profits from the PROPS collection will be donated to Design Can, supporting their work towards a more inclusive and accessible design industry.

In fact, this vivid mass of material is made from a cork and plaster mix original to Odd Matter’s work. Here, they have molded their signature material for the first time to create objects that are simultaneously freeform and contained.

Henrik’s playful approach to form making is best demonstrated in his Slurp series of works. Cutting into sheets of wood to leave characterful perforation-as-pattern is typical. As is applying a thick layer of glossy paint, rendering the final forms softened and cartoon-like.

A wholly original technique, unique to Wendy’s practice, of winding cotton rope around a bespoke frame and sealing it with silicone is used to make these unexpected textile objects. Tactile and soft but surprisingly structural too, the Regen Stools turn textile into three-dimensional shapes in the most inventive way.

Painstakingly selecting the materials she works with is a feature of Linde Frey of Destroyers/Builders work, as is an eye for architectural forms. Here, an impossibly decorative hunk of flamed Tulip wood is sympathetically cut into naturalistic blocks and assembled like heroic primitive structures.

Mirror Block Stool
South Korea
Under his practice Ilworks, Seongil Choi works with industrial processes, uncompromising forms and a tough material palette. These chunky stools glisten as though sliced from solid metalbut are in fact painstakingly constructed from welded sheet steel and mirror polished for an inexplicable amount of time.
